Side effects of the vaccine usually include redness, swelling, and soreness where you were injected (if you go the shot route), but "a small percent of individuals, around one or two percent, can get a fever that can last for 24 or rarely 48 hours", Schaffner says.

Some people do get achy and exhausted after getting the vaccine but that's usually just the immune system mounting a response. Some are hospitalized and some die.

Florida health officials say a child is the first to die during this year's flu season. "Get a flu shot; wash your hands; cover your cough, clean and disinfect surfaces and stay home if you become ill". According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some 80,000 Americans died during the brutal 2017-18 flu season, including 183 children who died from flu or flu-related causes, the highest number since the CDC starting keeping records on nationwide pediatric influenza deaths in 2004. The vaccine is widely available at doctor's offices and pharmacies and it take a couple of weeks to build immunity to the flu and the flu season has started. In all, influenza and pneumonia directly caused or contributed to about 1,700 deaths in Kansas.
