Mediaite reports the CNN claim is that the Middle East nation is preparing a report that will admit Khashoggi's death.

A team of Turkish police investigating the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has spent more than nine hours in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, as reports circulated that the kingdom may concede the killing took place there.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is still missing, almost two weeks after he entered the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul.

President Donald Trump said that country could face "severe punishment" if Khashoggi, a legal resident of the USA, was killed inside the consulate.

Trump's comments came after a telephone conversation with King Salman, father of the crown prince, the first such talks since the crisis erupted.

Pompeo landed in Riyadh on Tuesday morning and was to immediately meet the king over the crisis surrounding Khashoggi.

The Journal, like CNN, said the Saudi statement has not been finalised. Trump said he didn't "want to get into (Salman's) mind", but he added, "it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers". "I told Ambassador bin Salman that he should expect a very negative response from both sides of the aisle in Congress if Mr Khashoggi was in fact kidnapped and murdered".

Saudi Arabia warned it would retaliate against any sanctions imposed on the oil-rich kingdom over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as more Western companies distanced themselves from the Gulf State.

Mr Trump said he would probably speak to Saudi Arabia's King Salman over the weekend "because I think it's appropriate for me to ask him what's going on".

Khashoggi, who recently has been living in Virginia and writing columns for The Washington Post, hasn't been seen since October 2, when he entered the Saudi Consulate to handle paperwork for his upcoming marriage. He was an outspoken critic of the Saudi regime, and was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
