Turkey plans to search the Saudi consul-general's official residence on Wednesday following repeated delays, as pressure mounts on Saudi Arabia to answer for the alleged murder of outspoken Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to a statement issued by State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert on Tuesday, Pompeo met earlier with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh during his stay in Saudi Arabia.

He had been critical of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests.

The Saudis have rejected Turkish claims that Saudi agents murdered Khashoggi inside the consulate. Erdogan said toxic material was found which had been "painted over".

A second search, cancelled on Tuesday because Saudi officials were not able to join, is expected to happen later on Wednesday.

France, Germany and Britain on Sunday expressed concerns over the case, calling for "a credible investigation" into the incident.

But he refused to be drawn on whether Khashoggi was alive or dead and who could be responsible.

"Pompeo said the leadership "strongly denied any knowledge" of what happened in the consulate. They didn't want to either", he said.

Bin Salman was with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Saudi Arabia during that call. Its interior minister has described the assertion as "lies".

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Trump warned against a rush to judgment, comparing condemnation of Saudi Arabia to the allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Saudis have strongly denied those allegations, but U.S. media outlets have reported they will acknowledge he was killed in a botched interrogation. However there has yet to be any sign of this being published.

His body was then reportedly disposed of at the nearby official residence of Saudi consul Mohammed al-Otaibi.
