On June 19, Canada became the second country in the world - and the first from the Group of Seven - to legalize marijuana on a national scale.

"Federal law supersedes state law", he said.

The government announced late past year that medical marijuana would be allowed, and the country is due to hold a national referendum by 2020 on whether to legalize and regulate adult use of marijuana. The regulations governing when, where, and how one can buy and ingest marijuana in Canada also vary by province. It is up to the border agent's discretion.

The dispensary, Canadian Safe Cannabis Services, has been open in Kamloops for the better part of a decade, and Semeniuk doesn't plan to switch to the swanky government-run shop - regardless of its legality. "Municipalities will have a one-time window to opt-out of permitting cannabis retail stores within their municipal boundaries and they can enact by-laws that further restrict smoking cannabis beyond the provincial minimum standards in places like parks". It's also still illegal for minors to smoke pot - and sharing a toke with one could get you up to 14 years in jail.

Even if some U.S. states and localities, including the capital Washington, permit medical or recreational pot use, the CBP warned that the drug remains illegal under USA federal law, giving them the responsibility to fight its use and promotion.

The federal government and many provinces have been cautious, starting with limited stores and products, including no edibles for a year, and tight control over supply.
