All rail lines into London Paddington reopen

Three of the four closed lines are running again this morning but Network Rail engineers are still working on one of them.

Trains were unable to run between London and Slough or Heathrow airport after 500 metres of overhead power cables suffered extensive damage during the testing of a new train fleet at Ealing at about 10pm on Tuesday.

Commuters faced a travel nightmare this morning when Paddington station was plunged into chaos after a Hitachi train caused damage to 500m of electrical power lines during a test last night.

The operator said: "We strongly advise customers to only travel if necessary in the Thames Valley area, and to check carefully before traveling elsewhere as long-distance journeys are likely to be affected".

Though some services were restored, travel was far from smooth, with passengers reporting overcrowded platforms, cancellations and general mayhem.

In a statement this evening, Network Rail warned that not all of its repairs could be completed over night. Some trains started running from midday, but there was major disruption to Great Western Railway and Heathrow Express services all day.

Two of the four lines from Slough to Paddington may open this afternoon. "A full and thorough investigation is taking place to identify the cause".

"A rail replacement bus service is now operating between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport".

Class 802 trains are bi-mode, meaning they can operate on electric and diesel power.

Delays on the Central, Circle, District, Hammersmith and City, Jubilee and Metropolitan London Underground lines compounded difficulties for passengers trying to get across the city after arriving at alternative rail hubs.
