The president has repeatedly claimed that the migrants, and immigrants more broadly, lead to increased crime rates and allow illegal substances to pass over the border, although statistics suggest they do not.

What will happen to them now?

The caravan quickly grabbed the attention of world leaders as word of its formation spread over the weekend.

During a press briefing in Arizona on Friday, the President reminded reporters the groups are not "little angels" but rather "hardened criminals".

US -bound migrant caravans have been going on for years - with traveling in numbers seen as offering protection from assaults, robberies, even shakedowns by police.

Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala says his country has chose to enforce a policy of "metered entry" since thousands of migrants are clamoring to cross. They included 52 children, nine of them 5 years old or younger.

They plan to cross Mexico's border in the coming days, then continue north to the United States.

Members of the migrant caravan began to cross the river into Mexico using rafts on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018.

The migrant caravan, comprised mostly of workers and peasants, has galvanized broad popular support across Central America and Mexico.

A bridge over the river marks an official crossing point.

On Wednesday, an advance group of exhausted migrants reached Guatemala City where they took refuge in a church-sponsored shelter. The Mexican government has pledged to deport those without papers, though it began letting a trickle of immigrants cross the border from Guatemala after Friday's bridge standoff. Pompeo thanked Mexico for its efforts to address the migrant flow, including calling in the United Nations for assistance. "The Mexican federal police are handling this in a professional and humane manner".

"This migration has political motivations", said Morales, "which is violating the borders and the good faith of the states and of course putting at risk the most important thing, people".

".In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have nearly no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!".

If Trump pulls out of the trade deal or closes the border, there would be major economic implications for both countries.

He did not seem concerned about Trump's threat to close the U.S. -Mexico border, saying the threat should be viewed in light of the hotly contested midterm elections in the United States, in which Trump has made border security a major campaign issue.

But in Mexico, where protesters alreadyhave been marching in support of the approaching Honduran migrants, caving to USA pressure wouldn't play almost as well.

He said that he makes 150 lempiras a day, or about $6, and has no work benefits.

It's also about Mexican emigrants living overseas, many of whom are undocumented.

Thursday night, the migrant caravan of at least 3,000, many waving Honduran flags and chanting slogans, arrived at the Guatemalan border with Mexico. And an internal GOP poll presented to the White House last month found that other issues - particularly opposing the "Medicare for All" policy of some Democrats - would better resonate with voters. He said Wednesday that his administration would offer work visas to Central Americans.

"Please let us in, we want to work!" Barely a week goes by without him warning about the danger posed by ultra-violent Central American gangs like MS-13, while chants of "build the wall" are a staple of his campaign rallies ahead of next month's United States midterm elections.
