Control of Congress will be divided next year, as Democrats won back the House of Representatives but President Donald Trump's Republicans maintained their Senate majority in crucial midterms, networks projected on Tuesday.

The U.S. Democratic Party on Tuesday has secured the House majority from the Republicans in the midterm elections, according to projections of multiple news outlets.

But it remains to be seen whether Democrats' rage will amount to the so-called "blue wave" they've anticipated for almost two years, or whether it's even enough to gain the 23 seats needed to eke out a Democratic majority in the House.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Braun snatched the seat from Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly, but corruption scandal-tainted Senator Bob Menendez saved his seat for the Democrats in New Jersey. Though the Republican gains in the Senate make it even less likely that there would be a two-thirds majority needed to convict a president and evict him from office.

And Rep. Adam Schiff, slated to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has vowed to probe alleged Trump campaign-Russia collusion.

"But when we can't find that common ground, we will stand our ground".

"Tremendous success tonight. Thank you to all!" the president wrote on Twitter.

"The Democrats flipped the House - President Trump is reportedly already blaming Paul Ryan", Kimmel said.

Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House and 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, a as well as state governors.

Democrats will pick up at least six and perhaps as many as 11 seats in the 150-member Texas House. Democrats won seats stretching from suburban Washington, New York and Philadelphia to outside Miami, Chicago and Denver.

Republicans and Democrats will split control of Congress next year.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas. Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss to Mr. Trump, coupled with the GOP's ability to retain control of Congress that year, also stunned the Democratic faithful.

Voters between the ages of 18 and 34 backed Democrats by 62% to 34%, up from 2014 when 54% backed Democrats and 36% supported Republicans.

Pelosi, currently the House minority leader, will now be the majority leader after the newly elected members take oath.

But the Democrats' push into Trump country remained uncertain. "We need to keep the Senate Republican to support the agenda of Donald Trump". They believed that Clinton's showing meant that some Republican voters, tired of GOP control of Washington and Austin, might defect.

Investors often favour Washington gridlock because it preserves the status quo and reduces uncertainty, even though many investors this time around had been hoping for a continuation of the Republican agenda.
