In ODI cricket, the record for most runs off one single over is with South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs, who looted 36 runs off Netherland's Dan van Bunge during their 2007 World Cup game, hitting six consecutive sixes and creating a world record.

New Zealand pair Joe Carter and Brett Hampton shattered the records by smashing a mind-boggling 43 runs in an over.

"It was right at the end and I suppose it was a "see ball, hit ball" scenario", said Hampton.

Two Kiwi batsmen have combined to set a new cricket world record for the most runs scored in an over. "We got a couple of free no balls which helped us to get going". Carter joined in on the fun thumping the hapless bowler for three mammoth sixes all through the leg side to take the record as Ludick's figures went from a respectable 9-0-42-1 to a horrific 10-0-85-1.

"At the end of it we came together and discussed, 'How many did we actually get?' We missed a four there".

Erasmus suggested at the Springboks' post-match press conference that his team would start tackling opponents in a similar manner if it were legal to do so.

The most runs conceded in an over in global cricket is 36 - a six from every ball - which has happened in both limited-overs formats, and twice in first-class cricket but never (yet) in a Test match.

Before this, the record was with Zimbabwe global Elton Chigumbura, who had scored 39 runs off Alauddin Babu while playing for Sheikh Jamal against Abahani Limited at Dhaka in the 2013-14 season.

The pair added 178 runs for the sixth wicket after Northern District was struggling at 95-5, eventually helping their team secure a 25-run victory over Central Districts.

The first ball went for four, thanks to Hampton, before three successive sixes, two of them off waist-high no balls.
