Tesla announced that Elon Musk's replacement as its chair will be Robyn Denholm, now chief financial officer at Australian telecommunications operator Telstra.

The appointment takes effect immediately: Denholm already is on Tesla's board.

The move scotches reports that James Murdoch might have been appointed to the job.

Musk, who has been on Tesla's board since 2004, tweeted in August he was considering taking the company private for $420 per share and had secured funding for a deal that was later scuttled but attracted scrutiny from several government agencies.

Tesla has endured a hard few months, following comments on social media in early August made by the firm's founder, Elon Musk, suggesting he had "funding secured" for a deal to take Tesla private.

The SEC accused him of manipulating the market and sued him in late September for making "false and misleading" statements to investors.

However, the carmaker made what Mr Musk called an "historic" profit in the most recent quarter.

The electric auto company said today in a statement that Denholm will leave Telstra after a six-month notice period with Australia's biggest telecoms company.

Ms Denholm has served on the Tesla board as an independent director since 2014 and has also worked in Silicon Valley and for companies including Toyota.

A statement from Ms Denholm said she believed in Tesla and looked forward "to helping Elon and the Tesla team achieve sustainable profitability and drive long-term shareholder value".
