Active shooter at North Carolina high school, police on scene

A group of students was reportedly on school grounds for cheerleading practice when the call was made, hours before classes were set to start at 8:30 a.m. The school district asked staff from Topsail elementary, middle and high schools to meet at the grocery store.

Pender County Emergency Director Tom Collins said he also believed a malfunctioning water heater caused a gunfire noise and that the sheriff's office is expected to hold a news conference soon.

No shooter was found when a SWAT team swept the school, and the sound was instead determined to have come from a water heater with a faulty combustion chamber.

An active shooter was reported at a North Carolina high school, but the school stated that it's a false alarm.

He said police had been "taking this seriously and making sure".

Hampstead is about 20 miles north of the city of Wilmington. It has around 1,300 students enrolled. A 16-year-old boy who authorities say armed himself with a semi-automatic rifle after hearing about that potential attack also was arrested.
