Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal apologised to Rangana Herath after the veteran spinner's last Test ended in a thumping 211-run defeat to England in Galle.

This earned England it's biggest win against Sri Lanka in terms of runs, eclipsing a 137-run win at Lord's in 1991.

England's Jack Leach celebrates the dismissal of Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis with teammate Joss Buttler, left, during the fourth day of the first test cricket match between Sri Lanka and England in Galle, Sri Lanka, Friday, Nov. 9, 2018.

"Chandimal's injury is grade one, and it will take 10 to 14 days", Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha said.

Dhananjaya de Silva, after a confident start, was caught at first slip by Root off Stokes in the last over before lunch for 21.

Jennings' second Test ton was neither pretty nor dynamic - and offered no clues about how he might reverse his struggles on seaming decks at home - but it was a study in concentration, the kind of effort England might have feared had headed for retirement with Alastair Cook. The work ethic throughout leading into this game has been exceptional so if that can continue throughout the tour - and we stay really clear about how we want to go about things on the pitch - then great. "We can go to Kandy with huge amounts of confidence and look to still improve and get better".

Fifteen without loss overnight, openers Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne withstood the pressure from England's formidable bowling attack for the first hour. In the first innings, for example, Niroshan Dickwella pushed at a Moeen Ali delivery, and put it straight in the hands of the short cover that had been placed there for exactly that stroke.

Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes claimed a wicket apiece as the hosts fell to 98-3, but Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews staged a recovery.

He was followed into the pavilion by Akila Dananjaya for 8 before Herath - perhaps a yard or two slower than in his pomp - was beaten by Stokes's quick arm as the 40-year-old dived for his crease.

He didn't field during England's second innings on Thursday, and batted in pain for scores of 33 and 1. From there on we were chasing the game.

"After that, the way they batted, they took the game away from us".

'They outplayed us in all three departments of the game'. In Test cricket, especially on wickets like these, it is very hard to come back, ' he said.
