In an interview with BBC Radio Manchester's Mike Sweeney this week, Child confirmed that Cruise's famously below-average stature is at least partly to blame for his exclusion from the new series.

"I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out ― participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series", he said. He's a really nice guy.

Child says he's targeting Netflix or another "long-form streaming television" outlet for the Jack Reacher TV series, but as of now, no network is attached.

'But ultimately the readers are right.

'The idea is that when Reacher walks into a room, you're all a little nervous just for that first minute.

However, Cruise will not be involved in the small-screen reboot, and Child has put this down to the actor's physical attributes.

Cruise first starred as the titular Jack Reacher, a brutal ex-army investigator, in the 2012 film, directed by his M:I helmer Christopher McQuarrie.

Action hero, Scientologist, the epitome of a movie star and my dad Larry Vick's favorite actor, Tom Cruise will not play the part on TV. "Lee typically describes Reacher as a massive specimen of a human being, but Cruise is only 5'7" (supposedly). While reviews were generally positive, the franchise never earned the same level of fan excitement as Cruise's Ethan Hunt movies. As well as replacing the Cruiser in the lead role, Child - real name Jim Grant - said that a deal had been signed for a television series. Despite some Jack Reacher superfans who were angry that Tom Cruise was too short to play the fictional character who doesn't actually exist, the film was a modest hit for Paramount, grossing $218 million worldwide.

Readers had complained about the Hollywood actor's suitability to play the imposing former major in the USA military police since his casting was announced in 2011.

The Jack Reacher film franchise is done, apparently.

I have never read the Jack Reacher books as they are not my kind of novel, I thought Jack Reacher was ok, but never saw the sequel.
