Facebook no longer best place to work in US, Apple gains ground

Google also fell in the ranks compared to a year ago, although it only dropped three spots compared to Facebook's six, now coming in at number eight. Ranked No. 1 a year ago, the social network is now the seventh best place to work, according to Glassdoor.

Employer review site Glassdoor has released its list of the 25 best places to work in Canada, for businesses with 1,000 employees or more.

The list is based on feedback from employees who submitted a review of their company on Glassdoor between October 23, 2017 and October 21, 2018.

Facebook, which was No. 1 a year ago, dropped to No. 7 for 2019, going from a 4.6 rating to a 4.5 rating among US -based employees.

The tech company employees, once in love with free food, flexible works hours and resort like offices, have also started looking at how much time they are giving to their office and for what. Employees on the site praised Facebook for its compensation and benefits, giving it a 4.6 rating out of 5, according to Glassdoor. Google and Apple were the only other companies that have made the list each year since its inception. As the world gets sceptical about the impact of technology - WhatsApp fuelling misinformation in countries like India - the employees in companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon and Twitter have also started considering whether the impact they are making in the world is positive or not. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon.

Only 53 per cent of Facebook employees said the company was making the world better, which is 19 per cent lower than previous year. "Bain fosters a really supportive and fun work environment", according to one associate there.

Reviews had come from current and former employees between 23 October, 2017 and 21 October, 2018. In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook's employee satisfaction rating was at 4.6.
