Google Says Goodbye to Allo

Shuttering Allo comes as Google focuses on RCS (Rich Communications Services) messaging, which is being supported by an increasing number of carriers. "And by refocusing on Messages and Duo for consumers and Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet for team collaboration, we're focused on delivering a simpler and more unified communications experience for all of you". Users have the ability to export all of their Allo conversation history by entering the app's menu, then tapping Settings. With little staff assigned to work on Allo, and very small amount of consumer adoption for Google's instant messaging service there's little reason to keep it around.

Numerous features in Allo have been implemented in Google Messages, like Smart Reply and GIF support, and the Allo team will not focus on the Messages app. SMS and online messaging can't exactly be compared, but we hope that Google is working on something special. Allo will continue to function until the end of March 2019.

Having said all that, Google's messaging efforts have arguably been all over the place up to now, though the company seems to be moving in the right direction to finally address that. Google says Duo is its "highest rated mobile apps and is seeing strong growth and engagement across both Android and iOS".

International Brent crude oil futures were at $61.37 per barrel at 0240 GMT, down 71 cents, or 1.1 percent from their last close. Doha accounts for only around two percent of OPEC output but the move caught the headlines given the political overtones.

The last time Allo was updated on Android is January and the app has already shown signs of aging with bugs and Google Drive restore is borked.

Incidentally, changes are also afoot as far as Hangouts is concerned, but Google denies that it is going away. Allo was supposed to be a modern take on text chat, incorporating smart replies, stickers and the Google Assistant, allowing users to effectively chat with Google itself. "We're fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime", wrote Klainer. All users will be moved to the Slack-like Hangouts Chat and video conferencing app Hangouts Meet-it did the same thing with G Suite users-but there's no word on when this will happen.

Android Messages and Duo.
