Bus driver arrested after three dead, 23 injured in Ottawa bus crash

The 269 is a "connexion route", operating during morning and evening rush hour, taking people between Mackenzie King station in the capital's downtown and Pinehill/Stonehaven station in Kanata.

The driver of the OC Transpo bus was taken into police custody for questioning, as the Ottawa Police Service continues its investigation.

Twenty-three people were hurt and taken to hospitals and three people died - two on the bus and one on the platform, Watson said.

Part of the upper right side of the bus was shorn off in the collision, which happened shortly before 4 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) at a busy transit station in the west end of the city.

"The driver of the bus, there was a requirement for us to arrest her at the scene and she's been transported at our headquarters for interviewing", said Chief Police Charles Bordeleau. He saw first responders cutting out seats and windows from the top floor of the bus and described the front of the bus as being "essentially cut off" or "demolished".

He went outside and came across a "chaotic" scene, with at least 30 emergency vehicles, including seven or eight fire trucks, and lots of police and bystanders, he said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was devastated to hear of those who were killed and injured in the bus collision.

The Canadian PressOttawa Mayor Jim Watson described the incident at Westboro station as "horrific" on Twitter.

The Red Cross has a number to call for anyone who suspects a family member may have been injured in the crash. "I have asked staff to ensure all necessary resources are made available to assist them through this hard time".
