DJ LeMahieu, Yankees Agree On 2-Year Contract

Signing LeMahieu isn't going to thrill Yankees fans who have their heart set on Machado, but this is a really solid, sensible move by Cashman. It happened again on Friday when the Yankees surprised the baseball world by landing D.J. LeMahieu. The deal is worth two-years, $24 million.

While the focus has been on the Bryce Haprer when it comes to the Phillies this weekend, it looks like they may be the favorite now to land Manny Machado.

LeMahieu, 29, is perennially among the game's premier defensive second baseman and has consistently hit for average, though his overall production has wavered somewhat on a year-over-year basis. His career high home-run total is 15, but is known to be a slap-hitter to the opposite side of the field which could be extremely beneficial for the Yankees moving forward. DJ LeMahieu is also a great fielder. The Yankees are expected to use LeMahieu in a variety of positions next season.

LeMahieu comes to NY after eight seasons with the Rockies. Lining up every day with Luke Voit, Gleyber Torres, Troy Tulowitzki and Miguel Andujar as the starting infield would have been one of the worst defensive groups in all of Major League Baseball. The righty could also slide over to third base late in games, serving as a defensive replacement for the defensively challenged youngster, Miguel Andujar. In my opinion, the 2019 New York Yankees are better without the expensive star.

Additionally, he can play third-base and fill in for Andujar if they choose to DH him and utilize his bat over his glove. The Yankees have not publicly made Machado an offer - and with LeMahieu, Andujar, Torres, and Tulowitzki now - they may never get to that point. We will have to wait and see, but the Bronx Bombers should be in the conversation.
