Several injured in bakery gas explosion

A fire broke out after the blast at around 9 a.m. local time, which police suspect may have been caused by a gas leak at a bakery.

Photos and videos of the blast on social media show a large building on fire with flames coming from its base and debris strewn across the street. As per initial reports, the intensity of the blast has damaged several buildings and many casualties and injuries are being feared.

The explosion came amid heavy security in Paris and around France for yellow vest protests expected later on Saturday (Sunday NZT).

Firefighters pulled injured victims out of windows and evacuated residents as smoke billowed out of the building on Rue de Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris. Parked cars were also damaged in the blast.

Emergency services were arriving at the scene.

Police have confirmed "a strong explosion" urging people to keep away from the area and make way for emergency vehicles.
