Gabbard, a four-time Democratic lawmaker in the US House of Representatives from Hawaii, told CNN Friday: "I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week". She made the announcement during a prerecording of CNN's Van Jones' show which airs on Saturdays.

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", CNN quoted Gabbard as saying in a pretaped interview for "The Van Jones Show".

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision", Gabbard told CNN. "There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", Gabbard added.

Gabbard, 37, said "the issue of war and peace" would be the main focus of her campaign.

Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary.

More recently, she was one of the few public officials who refused to immediately blame the Syrian government for the horrific chemical attack that killed dozens of people, including children, in April. She had been a force in Hawaii politics for years, making news by becoming the youngest person - just 21 at the time - ever elected to the state legislature. Batrice was Bernie Sanders's deputy campaign manager in 2016.

Gabbard's announcement comes after the progressive congresswoman was the headline speaker at a December meet-and-greet with Democrat activists in Exeter, New Hampshire, where she told local reporters that a White House bid was on the table.
