Baby with umbilical cord still attached found in middle of California road

Authorities are trying to identify the person who abandoned the infant.

The unidentified man told the mother to take her child to the fire station or a nearby children's hospital - but the women just drove away.

Police are searching for the mother of a newborn who was abandoned in the middle of a road in California with her umbilical cord still attached. The infant was just hours old and wearing soiled clothing in temperatures skirting 30°F, according to the California Highway Patrol Central Division.

Authorities are seeking the mother. Her physical description is not known, but she left the scene in a small white SUV, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman was described by Madera County Sheriff's Office as a "Hispanic female adult, possibly in her early 20's". "We'd like to remind everyone that there are many safe surrender sites that will allow someone to surrender a newborn child without any questions asked".

"The man directed her to the fire station and the Valley Children's Hospital down the street, and suggested she take the baby there".
