Gabriel slapped with four-match ODI ban over Root incident

Gabriel, 30, accepted an ICC charge after he was warned by on-field umpires during the third Test for comments made towards England captain Joe Root.

When asked post-play about the incident, Root suggested Gabriel may have uttered something he "might regret", but was reluctant to explain exactly what was said.

Following captain Jason Holder's one-match Test ban for his team's second Test slow over rate, fiery fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been controversially slapped with a four-match one-day global suspension by cricket's world governing body, the ICC, after being found guilty of player abuse.

"That battle was a good contest, he's had a wonderful series and he should be proud".

The charge means Gabriel has accrued eight demerit points - cricket's disciplinary penalty system - in a two-year period, leading to a four-match one-day global ban.

Gabriel was not included in the initial squad for the five ODIs against England but the Windies had made it clear he would be added after a brief rest period and meant to call up the 30-year-old as injury cover for Keemo Paul and Rovman Powell.

"I don't know who said what to whom.but boy do I applaud Joe Root's reaction here", Hussain wrote.

U.K. Sports Minister Mims Davies was among those who praised Root for his stance.

Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain also praised Root, who was eventually bowled out by Gabriel after scoring 122 runs-more than any of his teammates.

West Indies coach Richard Pybus was unaware of any potential controversy at close of play, but told the BBC: "Nothing has been reported to me but if a comment was made we'll review it and if it was untoward we'll be addressing it".

"I think it is fair to say that neither of us ever expected the issue to escalate to the point that it has".
