Police Radio Audio of Moment NYPD Detective is Murdered

New York City Police identified the fallen officer as NYPD Detective Brian Simonsen, a 42-year-old, 19-year member of the NYPD.

Both officers were rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where Simonsen was pronounced dead.

O'Neill described the suspect, as a 27-year-old career criminal.

"Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it is because of the actions of the suspect that Detective Simonsen is dead".

"That was when Detective Simonsen was shot", the commissioner said.

"We're going to be looking for the public's help in getting more information about him, about what he may or may not be involved in", Chief of Department Terence Monahan said.

NYBefore Tuesday, eight U.S. police officers had been killed by firearms while on duty in 2019, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website.

Spectrum News NY1 reported that the detective that was shot and killed "was 1 year away from retirement, @MylesMill reports". A witness said he heard 10 to 11 shots fired before he saw someone - believed to be the sergeant - limping to his vehicle.

Dozens of officers were seen hugging and crying in the hospital lobby as Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived shortly after the shooting. News 12 is told he was shot multiple times.
