Rep. Walter Jones Jr. Dies On 76th Birthday

Jones represented North Carolina's 3rd District - including the Outer Banks and several military installations - for 24 years.

A statement from Jones' office said he passed away Sunday afternoon in Greenville.

Last month it was announced Jones was in hospice care after breaking his hip.

The Republican lawmaker was also a man of faith, dedicating his life to serving his savior, Jesus Christ, and to standing up for Americans who needed a voice, for the military and for their families.

Instead of rationalization or doubling down, he devoted much effort to understanding the tragic mistake the entire nation had made and to seeing how such mistakes could be avoided in the future. But Jones deserves recognition and tribute for reasons that all Americans, including ones who would have disagreed with him on many issues, ought to appreciate.

Jones, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1995, was at one point a vocal supporter of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The next year, Jones' misgivings about the war blossomed into full-fledged opposition to it and similar foreign interventions after he attended the funeral for a Marine who was killed in Iraq.
