In 2016, Scotland Yard was given more money to investigate a new lead in Madeleine's disappearance - a tip that a gang of European traffickers took her after snapping pictures of her at the resort's beach.

The famously aggressive British tabloids were relentless in covering the story. But despite a lot of theories and several suspects, Madeleine was never found, and no one was ever charged in relation to her disappearance.

The synopsis listed on Netflix reads: "A couple's grief over their daughter's disappearance is compounded by a frenzied media and a detective's mistaken belief that they played a part".

This was based on evidence gathered by the UK's top child protection officer on the UK's first investigation into the disappearance, Jim Gamble, and head of the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in the US Ernie Allen, who created an image of Madeleine aged up to how she would look at 15.

It also features interviews with Goncalo Amaral, the retired Portuguese police chief who is certain that Gerry and Kate killed their daughter then staged a kidnapping to cover it up.

"Particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it".

The Netflix series promises new interviews with people connected to the case, with input from more than 40 contributors in all. Emma Cooper and Thomas Benski serve as executive producers. Her disappearance remains a mystery to police. The McCanns declined to participate, they explained in a statement shared on the website FindMadeleine.com.

He said: "I absolutely believe that in my lifetime we will find out what has happened to Madeleine McCann".

Their spokesperson told The Guardian: "Kate and Gerry didn't ask for it and don't see how it will help the search for Maddie on a practical level, so they chose not to engage".

They've also reportedly urged others to refuse doing interviews with production house Pulse Films, who's making the series.

As the Independent reports, McCann said at a statement: "We are aware that Netflix are planning to screen a documentary in March 2019 about Madeleine's disappearance".
