Remainer Speaker Bercow Blocks Vote on Stopping Second Referendum

In a letter for Mr Corbyn the opposition party leaders said: "We welcome Labour's decision to support a second European Union referendum and would be pleased to meet to discuss how we can put the decision back to the people - with the option to remain in the European Union".

Labour's divisions over Brexit were laid bare as four MPs quit frontbench positions and a fifth resigned as a shadow ministerial aide to vote against a second referendum.

He referenced the official People's Vote campaign, who have said they do not back the proposal tabled by Independent MP Sarah Wollaston.

A No 10 spokesman said she did not discuss resigning after her latest defeat because her government had recently won a confidence vote in the Commons. "But extending Article 50 without a clear objective is not a solution. That's why MPs must reject this deal today", the politician noted.

"I also reiterate our support for a People's Vote - not as a political point-scoring exercise but as a realistic option to break the deadlock". This would prevent May from offering her Brexit deal again.

Meanwhile the United Kingdom government has said it will cut tariffs on a range of imports from outside the European Union and introduce measures to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland in a no-deal scenario.

Mrs May agreed but insisted her deal is a "good deal" and she wants the United Kingdom to leave with a good deal.

Mrs May declined to do so, sticking by her deal as the best way to Brexit, but added money had been made available for no-deal preparations.

The opposition will initially focus on opposing no deal - which is expected to be defeated on Wednesday - and believes that an extension to the March 29 deadline is inevitable because more time is needed to negotiate an alternative, the Guardian reported.

Theresa May is making a final bid to save her Brexit deal ahead of a crunch Commons vote.

But although she managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January. "Tonight she's not even showing the leadership to whip on no deal".

A group of both Remain and Leave Conservative MPs have tabled this amendment.

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house".

Amid reports Brexiteer ministers have been granted a free vote on this proposal, Tory MP Steve Baker told BBC News the plan - which would see Brexit delayed until 22 May - was "eminently reasonable".

If the deal is not passed by then, the United Kingdom would need a longer extension, with reports that the United Kingdom is making contingency plans for European Parliament elections.
