Christchurch: The quiet New Zealand city of Christchurch was struck by two deadly attacks on Friday, with 49 people killed and another 20 seriously injured after gun assaults on mosques as Muslims worshipped.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at about 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT), and urged people in the area to stay indoors.

"I would never have expected anything like this to happen in Christchurch, I'd never expect this to happen in New Zealand", Dalziel said, as quoted by the Stuff news outlet. "Prince Philip and I send our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives".

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yusuf called on the New Zealand government to investigate "the root cause of such terrorism and hand a hefty punishment to the attackers".

"At this tragic time, my thoughts and prayers are with all New Zealanders", she said in her message.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan took to Twitter to convey his horror at those murdered simply due to their faith.

"When the flames of hatred are fanned, when people are demonized due to their faith, when people's fears are played on rather than addressed, the consequences are deadly as we have seen so sadly today", he said.

In Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, leader of the biggest party in the country's ruling coalition, said one Malaysian had been wounded in the attack, which he described as a "tragedy facing humanity and universal peace".

Al-Azhar University, Egypt's 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Islamic learning, called the attack "a unsafe indicator of the dire consequences of escalating hate speech, xenophobia, and the spread of Islamophobia".
