Yet last week, 90 new cases were reported by the Centers for Disease Control.

The most recent outbreaks appears to have originated from travelers who visited countries experiencing outbreaks of the disease, including Israel, the Philippines and Ukraine.

"We are on track to have one of the highest numbers of cases of measles reported since we eliminated the disease in the year 2000".

A spike in case numbers was, in addition, reported for countries including the USA and Thailand with high levels of vaccination coverage. The highest number of reported cases since 2000 was 667 in 2014, according to the CDC.

USA health officials on Monday said 555 measles cases have been confirmed so far this year, up from 465, as of a week ago. If the outbreaks aren't brought under control, public health experts worry that the cases in 2019 will hit a record almost two decades after measles's "elimination" in the United States.

A sign warning people of measles in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg, two days after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency in parts of Brooklyn in response to a measles outbreak, is seen in New York, U.S., April 11, 2019.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) also released a report stating that the number of reported global cases of measles has increased by 300 percent in the first few months of 2019, in comparison to the same period of time previous year.

"Over recent months, spikes in case numbers have also occurred in countries with high overall vaccination coverage, including the United States of America as well as Israel, Thailand, and Tunisia, as the disease has spread fast among clusters of unvaccinated people", the World Health Organization statement said.

Forget 'Game of Thrones,' HBO teased Season 2 of 'Big Little Lies'
Kelley said Season 2 starts with the ladies seeming "very well put together, but then the fissures and fractures begin to emerge. Big Little Lies season 2 will premiere on HBO in the USA on June 9, and will hit Foxtel in Australia not long after that.

The mistaken belief can be traced back to 1998, when a doctor in the United Kingdom published a now discredited study claiming the MMR vaccine was linked to autism. However, the claim spread fear among parents, leading to a small but vocal faction that makes up the current anti-vax movement.

Before the development of the measles vaccine in the 1960s, the USA recorded almost a half million cases each year, the CDC says.

Claims about health risks from vaccines are "based purely on fabrication", he continued.

Measles can be an extremely serious disease. "That's been proven. There is no association whatsoever between the measles vaccine and autism". Officials there banned children not vaccinated against measles from public spaces last month.

According to the CDC, as many as one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young kids.

Almost a quarter of measles patients are hospitalised with complications that can lead to disabilities, brain damage, blindness and hearing loss.

Measles can also cause pregnant women to give birth prematurely or have a low-birth-weight baby.

Measles isn't just rising in the United States.
