The latest confirmed case announced on Friday is related to worldwide travel, not the current MI outbreak. A person is considered immune if he or she was born before January 1, 1957, has received two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine or has a lab test confirming immunity.

In Onondaga County, only eight out of 170 schools fell below a 95 percent vaccination rate for the 2017-18 school year, according to a database of state Health Department data.

Brooklyn is a borough in New York City known for its tight-knit, ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

Measles is extremely contagious disease that can be unsafe, especially for babies and young children.

Caused by a virus that replicates in the nose and throat of an infected child or adult, the virus circulates worldwide and about 90 per cent of susceptible people (persons not vaccinated) who are exposed to someone with the virus will be infected, says the MOH brief.

The ParCare Community Health Network caters to Orthodox families. A child's right to be free from painful, life-threatening and entirely preventable diseases also ought to be part of the equation. MDHHS follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance and does not recommend routine measles vaccinations for children less than 12 months of age unless there is a suspected measles exposure; there is thought to be an imminent measles exposure such as being in areas of known measles; or worldwide travel planned.
