While Kenya's Cherono claimed victory by just two seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa after the pair and Kenya's Kenneth Kipkemoi split away from a large lead group, Ethiopia's Degefa made her move just four miles into the women's race and at one point had a lead of nearly three minutes ahead of her rivals.

The 42-year-old mother of three finished fifth in the women's 40-and-over division, 46th among women, and 592nd overall out of the roughly 30,000 runners.

The 2019 Boston Marathon will be remembered for one of the most dramatic finishes in race history.
