Thiel: Best things about Wilson's deal, and worst

Russell Wilson is sticking around with the Seattle Seahawks as the highest paid player in the NFL.

The deal is worth $140 million over four years with a $65 million signing bonus, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday, making Wilson the highest-paid player in the National Football League at $35 million per year.

"They basically took money that would've been in base salaries and put it into the signing bonus", Pelissero said of Wilson's deal.

Wilson's 2015 extension averaged $21.9 million, which at the time made him the second-highest-paid quarterback in terms of annual average below Rodgers at $22 million. The team also added C.J. Anderson as a power back and Jesse James as a co-starter at tight end, but more help is expected among the eight picks in next week's draft. He reached the playoffs in six out of his first seven campaigns including bringing the first championship to the organization by winning one of out two trips to the Super Bowl. There had been some building chatter about his potential departure from the franchise if a new deal wasn't met, but this officially dismisses that possibility altogether. The deal reportedly was completed just before midnight Monday, after which a sleepy-eyed Wilson tweeted a video about it as he lay in bed with Ciara (suitable for work). With Wilson locked up until 2023, the Seahawks are poised to be a contender for years to come.

Wilson said, "Imma see y'all in the morning". His contract is probably going to be the least expensive of the four, although another strong season next year could push his price up into the $10 million dollar range annually. Roethlisberger, with his contract expiring after next season, could get a short-term deal worth far more than the $21.85 million per year he's making right now.

"You're getting Russell Wilson his prime now", Danny Kanell said on Tuesday's "Off the Bench". Miami also has the third-most cap space in the league and would have no problem extending Wilson for as long as he wanted to stay in Miami. According to NFL Network, $107 million of the deal is guaranteed and it has a no-trade clause. He threw 35 touchdowns to seven interceptions in 2018, while completing 65.6 percent of his pass attempts.

Wilson's contract has one fewer year than Stafford's, so the annual can expectedly be higher, but it's a significant jump. Though he's played through various injuries in his career, he's never missed a start since his rookie year, and he's played at a superlative level despite disgusting offensive line play through most of his career, and some highly limited passing concepts. Jarran Reed, I know that's a guy that they really think is one of the core young leaders on the team (and) they really want to get him locked up. "Your dedication, consistency, and commitment to the game never wavers. I'm excited about that".
